Whilst it’s been all bad news recently, price of building materials continues to spiral into the stratosphere, we hope there may be some stabilisation in steel mesh pricing in the near future.
The news is that the price of steel re-bar has dropped, see below chart, and we hope this will see itself translate into pricing stability or, let’s hope, a decrease in prices.
While there are still some shortages, most mesh and bar are available and processed products are still taking anything from 2-10 working days. Cages are still hard to pin down to less than 4 working weeks.
There is a bit of chatter on the new bar in town – GFRP Durabar – this product is getting traction with the price of steel continuing to rise and labour being in short supply.
This bar comes in 10mm x 5.8m lengths, weighs a fraction of mesh, and best of all cost’s half the price. What’s the catch? It does not come as sheets but single bar which requires tying together with centres 400 – 500mm so a bit of labour is required but, as they weigh so little, it can be a one-man job. It can also be carried on a standard UTE or work vehicle able to carry 5.8m so no delivery fees for smaller jobs. For jobs that do not have engineering this bar is a cost-effective alternative to steel mesh.
